Structure

  • PDC Cutters: The key component. Each cutter is a composite disk made of a thin layer of synthetic polycrystalline diamond sintered under ultra-high pressure and temperature onto a tough tungsten carbide substrate.
  • Bit Body: Usually made of steel or tungsten carbide matrix, designed with multiple blades (e.g., 3–8 blades) to hold the PDC cutters.
  • Nozzles: For drilling fluid (mud) flow to cool cutters, lubricate, and carry cuttings to the surface

Working Principle

PDC bits break rock by a shearing action as the bit rotates. The sharp, hard diamond edges slice through the formation rather than grinding or crushing it. This delivers high penetration rates (ROP) with lower weight on bit (WOB) compared to roller-cone bits.
